About ECM's Instructors

ECM Instructors bring energy and creativity to the classroom as they share their area of expertise and integrate it with the academic curriculum in engaging ways. Our Instructors represent the arts, culture, or an area of STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). This work primarily takes place in schools during the school day with additional opportunities in our afterschool and summer camp programs. ECM Coaches lead a collaborative planning process between the ECM Instructor and classroom teachers to design highly engaging arts/STEAM lessons that are designed to meet the needs of students. Instructors working in our in-school Engaged Learning Experience program visit the school for several days (five days is the average) and lead students through the learning activities with the participation and support of the classroom teacher. Instructors working in our afterschool and summer camps work various days and hours depending on the parameters of the programs.

engaging

For example

• ECM Drama Instructors bring a wide variety of topics (including Social Studies units, Science concepts, etc.) to life through drama, games and skits.

• ECM Visual Arts Instructors design art projects that help students build their understanding of academic concepts.

• ECM Dance Instructors guide students through the process of choreographing movements that represent key concepts and ideas (such as a dance that represents the water cycle).

• ECM STEM Instructors use toy building bricks to integrate academic concepts with Engineering and Design.

• Another ECM STEM Instructor teaches students major science concepts, such as Newton’s laws of motion, through the Circus Arts.

We also have some Instructors who don’t fall under one specific STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) area but cross several. For example, one year we had an instructor who worked with students to create magnetic “science toys” that were then marketed and sold to the rest of the school.

Other opportunities for ECM’s Instructors include outreach events in the community and, as mentioned above, teaching in our annual Summer STEAM Institute (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) and in ECM's afterschool programs.

The common ground shared by all of our ECM Instructors is a passion for teaching and a focus on high levels of student engagement in thinking, making, creating, imagining and designing! Our Instructors make learning fun!
