Program Description: The Gullah Story
The Plantation Singers offer a variety of Experience options focused on the history of Gullah singing, storytelling, and sweetgrass baskets. They will help to increase student knowledge about the impact of African Americans on South Carolina culture. Students learn the underlying facts about songs created and sung by African Americans as well as historical facts, language, and customs from the Gullah heritage.
With their energetic performances the Plantation Singers play an important role in the preservation of the Gullah spirituals and the sacred music of the South Carolina Lowcountry.
Teachers who select the Plantation Singers for an ECM Experience will work with their ECM Coach to identify engaging and worthwhile learning activities that will prepare their students for the performance and extend their learning after its conclusion.
